Opyt

Opyt vs NotebookLM

A notebook holds the sources you uploaded for one project. Opyt is the store all your projects draw from, and it fills itself.

NotebookLM is free, needs no install, cites every answer and turns your material into audio and video overviews. For thirty PDFs and one question it is the right tool, and Opyt is overkill.

The tell is the source cap: 50 per notebook on the standard tier, up to 600 at the top. A notebook is a bounded, hand-assembled, per-project pile. Opyt is one unbounded store that spans every project you have ever cared about and keeps growing between sessions.

Where NotebookLM is better

  • Zero setup and no cost: open a tab. Opyt is a clone, a virtualenv, Python 3.10+ and one API key.
  • Audio overviews, video overviews and mind maps. Opyt produces no artifacts at all, by design.
  • YouTube, Drive and PDF ingestion. Opyt has no video source of any kind, and its five source types are X, Substack, GitHub, blogs and papers.
  • It will go and find sources for a topic you name.

Where Opyt is better

  • It persists and accumulates, grown from 691 bookmarks and 492 follows that took no filing at all.
  • No source cap. The top NotebookLM tier stops at 600 sources per notebook; the live Opyt store holds 2,830 and does not partition by project.
  • It counts: 96 saves on tariffs and inflation against 84 on the grid and 41 on GLP-1 trials, over any date range. A notebook cannot be asked that question.
  • One SQLite file on your disk, 115.9 MB exported whole, in 4.2 s.

Which one

Pick NotebookLM if

  • You have a bounded pile and one deadline
  • You want an audio overview to listen to
  • You want it free and instant

Pick Opyt if

  • The same sources keep coming back across projects
  • You want the pile to assemble itself
  • You want to ask what you have been reading, not just what a document says

Reach for NotebookLM when you have a project in front of you. Opyt holds the decade of reading those projects keep drawing on, which is why a source cap would break it.
