Opyt

Opyt vs Obsidian

Obsidian is where your own thinking lives. Opyt is where everyone else's arrives, without you filing it.

Obsidian is an authoring tool. Opyt is an acquisition tool. That single distinction settles almost every question about which one to use.

A vault holds what you wrote or clipped, and its quality is capped by how much you type. Opyt holds what other people published, and it grows on the days you never open it. Opyt has no authoring layer at all. The note-writing tools were removed from the product.

Where Obsidian is better

  • Writing and thinking in place. If the job is developing your own ideas, Obsidian wins and Opyt is not a substitute.
  • Private material. Meeting notes, drafts and journals belong in a vault. Opyt only ingests published work.
  • Ecosystem. A decade of plugins, themes, mobile apps and sync.
  • Structure you control. You shape the backlinks and the graph yourself.

Where Opyt is better

  • Nothing to file, tag or maintain. The input is behavior you already have.
  • The corpus compounds without you: 1,473 of 2,830 documents came from confirmed people's archives and 67 from standing queries, with no keystroke behind any of them. A vault grows only when you type.
  • Whole bodies of work arrive at once: one confirmation is 3,412 posts, 38 repos and 96 essays.
  • Distributional answers: 96 documents on tariffs and inflation against 84 on the grid and 41 on GLP-1 trials, counted over all 2,830 rather than sampled.

Which one

Pick Obsidian if

  • You are building your own written system
  • Most of what you want to keep is something you wrote
  • You want full control over structure

Pick Opyt if

  • Your reading list outgrew what you can file
  • You want other people's work, not a place to write
  • You want it to keep working while you are not looking

Most people should run both. Obsidian takes what you write and Opyt takes what you read, so they never compete for the same job.
